Examining SlickEdit 2007: Code Quick | Think Slick
by Emmett Dulaney

If you look through the archives of UnixReview.com, you'll readily see that one of my favorite utilities is/was Visual SlickEdit. I first started using it with version 5, then was amazed each year when the version numbers incremented and the features multiplied.
This year, the company has opted to change their numbering scheme. The successor to version 11, instead of being named Visual SlickEdit version 12, is named SlickEdit 2007. Don't let the name change fool you – it's still the same great product that it always was, only now there are even fewer reasons to not use it.
SlickEdit runs on 8 platforms, supports 40 languages, and emulates 13 editors. The following list shows the platforms that it will run on – each requiring a minimum of 256MB of RAM:
- Windows Vista, XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT
- Linux (2.6 kernel and LSB 3.1 or higher)
- AIX (5 and higher)
- HP-UX (11 and higher)
- IRIX (6.5 and higher)
- Solaris SPARC (7 and higher/x86)
- Mac OS X (10.3 and higher)
While this version is notable in that it now includes Vista and the 2.6 Linux kernel, it is also notable in that it removed a number of old operating systems that just aren't worth supporting. While you can say there are 52 languages now supported, that is not enough information – you also need to know which offer color coding only and supported encodings. ( |
