Certification Issues and Thoughts
by Emmett Dulaney
In addition to talking about certification, I spend a lot of time listening
and asking questions on related matters. Sometimes my perspective on a particular
issue will shift significantly based on the ability of someone to express a
view on the topic that I had not previously considered. During the past few
months, it came to my attention that some of these exchanges would be beneficial
to a wider audience.
What follows are questions that Iýve asked and the answers that I've received
from three people in various IT fields. Their answers have been edited for length
and clarity, but not for content. The three individuals asked that I not use
their real names so they wouldn't have to guard their thoughts; they were chosen
because of the wide spectrum they cover. Ron is the IT manager for a company
that is consistently picked as the ýfastest growing companyý in the region.
Frank is a professor at a small college of 2,000 who also regularly teaches
certification classes at the local chain training center. Scott is a consultant
currently specializing in IT compliance issues who has also written a number
of books in the past.
What certifications are you currently pursuing?
RON: None specifically. I was an MCSE under the old track,
then made it halfway through the 2000 track before switching employers to a
Novell shop. Iýve toyed with the idea of finishing it up now under 2003 but
havenýt checked into it much. When Novell started pushing Linux, I took a couple
of classes but never took the exams.
FRANK: Project management from PMI.
