The Open Road: A look at OpenSolaris
by Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier
Since Sun released OpenSolaris back in June, I've been itching to spend a little time with the release and see what OpenSolaris has to offer and what might be coming up for Solaris enthusiasts and developers, as well as users who are new to Solaris.
Since OpenSolaris isn't really "finished," this will be more of a overview,
rather than a critical review of the product. Suffice it to say that there are
still rough edges on the OpenSolaris release, and I'm not quite ready to endorse
it for production environments. The installer is still a bit rough, and some
things may not work as well as Solaris 10. However, it's definitely of interest
to anyone working with Solaris now and to people interested in open source *nix.
For the purpose of this column, I'm sticking to the x86 version of OpenSolaris;
I haven't installed OpenSolaris on UltraSPARC hardware just yet.
Getting OpenSolaris
There are a few ways to get your hands on OpenSolaris, and it largely depends
on how much work you wish to do to get a bootable system going. The OpenSolaris
downloads
page offers either the source download or prebuilt binary download. Then you'll
want to read the release
notes. If installing *BSD or Linux has just seemed too simple lately, this
will make up for it.
I installed OpenSolaris in VMware Workstation 5.0, and the install seemed to go fine.
