From the Archives

Book Review: Database in Depth
Peter Salus
Thirty years ago, I was involved in a project involving a lot of data. I was running over a 110-baud line from the DECwriter II in my office to the IBM 360 in the University of Toronto Computing Centre. I was using APL. And I read a book on databases by C.J. Date.

Regular Expressions: As Time Goes By
Cameron Laird
'Have the time? Often, as developers, having the time is difficult. We don't mean just that schedules are hard to meet — though that's true — but that temporal calculations such as, "give up on this look-up if it takes more than ten seconds" or "set a deadline based on a date as entered by the end-user" or "tell the customer that his documents will be shipped after three business days", turn out to be far harder to program than an outsider might expect. Why the complexity? What can we do about it?

Book Review: Linux in a Windows World
Joe "Zonker" Brockmeier
Many Linux enthusiasts I know, myself included, would be quite happy if Microsoft Windows didn't exist. However, it's a very rare organization that operates entirely without Windows somewhere in the environment. If you're an admin for a company or an organization that uses Linux and Windows — or you want to introduce Linux into a Microsoft-only environment — then you should pick up a copy of Linux in a Windows World. The book provides a competent overview of many of the technologies you'll need to master in order to provide service to Windows clients using Linux and to bridge the gap between the two operating systems.

What's New in Certification?
Emmett Dulaney
Technology is constantly evolving and bringing with it a requirement for new skills and abilities. With the purpose of certification being to verify that an individual has an authenticated level of acumen/proficiency, there is never an end to the stream of new certifications that vendors release or update. This month, the focus is on new and upcoming certifications that should be of relevance to UnixReview readers. There are three distinct categories: engineer-level, desktop, and security certifications. I'll follow the discussion of each category with a few predictions on what I see coming down the pike.

Regular Expressions: Two Easy Steps Better Than One Hard One
Complicated regular expressions and yacc are powerful parsing tools, but they can cause trouble in inexperienced hands. One helpful alternative is "partial evaluation" (PE) or "active data" parsing
