Certification: Changes to SCLP and other Certifications
Emmett Dulaney
As summer winds down, a number of vendors are in full swing making changes to their existing Linux/Unix certifications. In the recent past, I ’ve looked at the changes underway at CompTIA in regard to the Linux+ certification. It is undergoing an update and overhaul aimed to make it more timely and relevant. This is far from the only certification currently getting such scrutiny. This month, the biggest transformation I’ll present is what is happening to the SCLP certification that just went live. I’ll also look at some other vendor’s changes, including additional changes at CompTIA, and try to bring everything that is happening in certification up to date.

Regular Expressions: Rexx Still Going Strong
Cameron Laird, Kathryn Soraiz
Because you're compulsive about four-letter names. Or because you're a refugee from the orphanages of OS/2 or Amiga, who likes the reliability of Unix, but misses a few more friendly faces. Or because you're curious about how good a lightweight language can be after a quarter century of refinement. Or because you have responsibilities that stretch across Windows, OS/400, MVS, Linux, and even rarer operating systems. Or simply because you want to get work done and are curious about whether Rexx might fit your situation better than the scripting language you're using now. All of these are good reasons to set aside a morning and introduce yourself to the oldest "personal programming language".

Book Review: IPv6 Network Administration
Peter Salus
IPv6 was intended to be a quick fix where the depletion of IPv4 address space was concerned (I've written about the history in my Big Book of IPv6 Addressing RFCs [2000]). But several developments intervened: CIDR, NATs, and RFC 1918 being the most significant. But, over the years, as the IETF committees toiled, the pressure of needing address space waned, and other things took on importance: VPNs and security are examples of this. And it has become quite clear that while network administration has always been more than just a piece of cake, expanding to 128-bit addressing together with filtering, firewalls, and the realization that IPv6 means IPv4 plus IPv6 will not make things simpler. (One can only envy those who had to deal with 5, 6, or 8-bit addressing 30-35 years ago.) IPv6 should yield more efficient routing, autoconfiguration, end-to-end security, generally superior QoS, and solid (rather than jury-rigged) features for mobile networking.

Book Review: Service Providers: ASPs, ISPs, MSPs, and WSPs
Cameron Laird
UnixReview.com readers are generally the "front-line" experts who make things happen in a technical sense with computing and related information systems. The books and products we review here are generally aimed at them. We make exceptions, though, and Service Providers: ASPs, ISPs, MSPs, and WSPs is one of several books "[f]ocused on the needs of the corporate IT and business manager" that deserve our attention. The initials in the current title, incidentally, stand for "Application", "Internet", "Management", and "Wireless Service Providers", respectively.

Certification: Examining the Updated Security+ Certification – Part One
Emmett Dulaney
According to CompTIA, Security+ is one of the more popular certifications they offer. To earn this entry-level vendor-neutral certification, you have 90 minutes to pass a multiple-choice exam (SY0-101) of 100 questions, and the cost is $237. Recently, CompTIA undertook a rolling revision of the exam. While not changing the domains or objectives, they updated the questions to focus on more recent technologies and their implementation in today’s world (don’t expect questions on how to implement a feature in Windows 95 anymore).
